A Tail of Tradition

105 years ago, the University of Missouri started a tradition, now known nation-wide, called Homecoming.  In Columbia, this day is widely regarded as “the best day of the year”, and the weekend does not have a shortage of activities to participate in.

This year, Sigma Kappa was paired with the men of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.  After weeks and weeks of preparation, Homecoming took place this last weekend, and we put on a pretty good show.14726256_530386493826011_1763132234476290048_n

The Homecoming festivities kicked off with the largest student run blood drive in the country.  This year, the Mizzou community received 4,374 units of blood, and each unit saves 3 lives! There was also a service event with the Food Bank, where 33,616 cans of food were collected, and 1,800+ hours were served!  Sigma Kappa placed 5th in the blood drive, and 1st in service!

The Tuesday night before Homecoming weekend, we participated in fling. We performed a skit and dance based on Rainbow Fish.  Our main character, Rainbow Fish, was trying to find her perfect match under the sea, Bachelorette style!

Homecoming continued with the banner, Decorate the District, and house decorations competitions!  We took our theme of Rainbow Fish and transformed it into amazing artwork.  Sigma Kappa placed 2nd in banner and Decorate the District and 1st in house decorations! We are so excited, because that’s a category that we’ve never placed in before!

Saturday morning, we participated in the Homecoming parade along with many other campus and Columbia community organizations.  Once again, we made our float based off of the Rainbow Fish story.

And last but not least, we enjoyed the game! Although, the Tigers lost, it was still a great day! We had an amazing time bonding with our sisters and putting all of these amazing events together! We can’t wait for Homecoming next year!

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s

This last weekend, our chapter participated in Columbia’s annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s. It was absolutely amazing to see all of our sisters come together to support such an amazing cause!

Epsilon Mu, once again, refuses to be number two! For the fourth year in a row, we are the number one fundraising Sigma Kappa chapter in the United States.  So far, we have raised $56,353.62, and that number is still growing!

Alzheimer’s is a disease that has affected many of us, and that’s why we’re so passionate about it.  More than 5.4 million Americans (that’s 1 in 9 people over the age of 65!) suffer from this disease, and over 15 million Americans provide unpaid care for those with Alzheimer’s.  We are so incredibly passionate about raising money for research because it is the 6th leading cause of death in America, and the only leading cause of death that there is no cure or medication to slow the progression for.

Gerontology with an emphasis on Alzheimer’s is one of three Sigma Kappa philanthropies.  Because of that, we love being able to go out and walk along side our community!

Together, we can cure this disease!

Big and Little, We’ll Always Be!

Last week was Big/Little reveal for the new members of Sigma Kappa! Women were paired with an older member to be their mentor and guide, along with best friend, for their remaining years here at Mizzou!

All week before they found out who their big is, the new members received gifts and clues!

Finally, the reveal came and they got to unwrap their big!

“Here’s to you, here’s to me, big & little, we’ll always be!”
Congrats new bigs and littles!

Welcome to Sigma Kampa!

Last Sunday, we welcomed 87 wonderful women into our chapter! We celebrated Bid Day with our camping theme, trail mix, and fun activities for all the new members.  We are so excited to show you all why Sigma Kappa is so close to all of our hearts!

We are also thrilled to welcome back our eight Panhellenic Counselors! These women disaffiliated for the summer to help the potential new members find their new homes! We are so proud of the work and dedication they have shown this week.

Greek Week 2016

Greek Week came to a close last night! We had so much fun being paired with the men of Sigma Chi and Alpha Gamma Sigma!

The week kicked off with the blood drive, hosted at the Rec.  1,632 units of blood were collected!

We then moved into the sports tournaments! We competed in dodgeball, flag football, soccer, basketball, volleyball and swimming!

We then had Fling! Our skit and dance, “The Golden Games”, combined the themes of retirement and the Olympics! Our banner also combined those themes!

And of course, all through the week, we had profit shares and service events! The profit shares benefited the Greek Week beneficiaries: Camp Kesem, Cedar Creek, Central Missouri Honor Flight, Ronald McDonald House, The Center Project and True North.  The service events that we participated in were at the food bank, Caring for Columbia and the Special Olympics.

The Best Weekend is Mom’s Weekend!

This weekend, the ladies of Sigma Kappa celebrated Mom’s Weekend.  Moms came from all over the country to spend a couple of days with their daughters.

The weekend kicked off Friday night at Paint the Town, where we got crafty.  We painted wine glasses with all different types of designs!

Saturday, we went to the Serenity Valley winery and enjoyed a nice lunch and the beautiful weather!

Overall, it was a very fun weekend spent with some of our favorite people!

“First my mother; forever my friend.”

Sigma Kappa Bid Day 2016

We welcomed 8 new sisters into our chapter last Friday!

After the Mystic Pizza event, Sweets with Sigma Kappa, and some coffee dates, we extended bids to 8 wonderful women! The chapter enjoyed pizza and ice cream with the new members on Friday at our bid day event.  Sigma Kappa has been “scooping” up the best since 1874!

Welcome to our chapter ladies! We can’t wait to show you everything we have to offer!
